Here are a few extra shots I tried while shooting 'Whisper' in Olympic National Park in Washington.
I had an idea in my head of what I wanted this shot to include... with the right speed and correct timing the leading edge of the surf would create an interesting leading line in the composition. I shot a few frames at the same settings (ISO 100, 24mm, f16, 1.3sec) as a series of waves swept across the beach.
You can see in these three frames how the speed and volume of the incoming wave can drastically change the composition of a shot. The first shot shows a larger wave that came up with speed and swept right through the beach, while the second shot shows a slow incoming wave getting stuffed by the receding water of the previous wave. The third shot shows exactly what I was looking for... the wave had enough speed to produce the line I was looking for, yet it was small and slow enough not to sweep right through the frame. Good timing and a bit of luck getting the right wave made this shot possible.
